African-Americans who suffer from Bipolar Disorder usually do not seek help, or they’re misdiagnosed. Blacks are less likely to be diagnosed or receive treatment. Many people with bipolar disorder also have a history of substance abuse and some also have psychotic symptoms. There is some evidence that mental health providers sometimes focus on the psychotic symptoms or substance abuse in Blacks at the expense of properly evaluating for and diagnosing bipolar disorder. I’m encouraging African-Americans who are suffering from any mental illness, please seek help immediately including teenagers!
